barf: "to vomit or retch," 1960, Amer.Eng. slang, probably onomatopoeic. (Oh, probably. DO YOU THINK?) But, according to word-detective.com: "the existence of BAR-F utility grade canned meat remains at least a remarkable coincidence."
puke: 1600, probably of imitative origin (cf. Ger. spucken "to spit," L. spuere); first recorded in the "Seven Ages of Man" speech in Shakespeare's "As You Like It." (Oh, there's a hilarious title)
Also German, Es kotzt mich an (lit. "I feel being vomited upon"), meaning "I'm sick and tired of it."
Another remarkable coincidence?: In Farsi, "barf" means "snow"--snow being the other substance which has covered my world a foot-deep in the last three days.
Not much could convince me to venture outside tomorrow. Not after what I've seen.
