Dream a Little Dream

Got all magical and dewy-eyed about childhood--my child's childhood in particular. And am now in the midst of a dilemma. I was trying to get Himself to go to sleep and told him that if he touched his forehead to mine and fell asleep, we could share a dream. His lamplike blue eyes lit up and he was so excited about this prospect that he couldn't settle down for more than an hour. "Have we shared a dream yet?" "Was that the dream?" (No, daddy flushing.) "What will our dream be? Do we get to decide? Who decides what we dream anyhow? What if I want to share a dream with you but it's not the dream that you want to share with me? If you're wearing just one sock because your other foot was itchy and you kicked off that sock can you still share a dream with someone else? Are you wearing socks? Was THAT the dream? (No, daddy flushing.) I really want to dream about an elephant. Could we make that our dream? Will I feel different in the morning? Can you share dreams when you're just napping? If you dream about an elephant does the elephant know that you have? Would that make an elephant mad? Is it dangerous to dream about motorcycles? If you fall off a motorcycle when you're dreaming of one, do you still hurt yourself?"

He finally drifted off, but how in the world am I going to convince him in the morning that we shared a dream and that there is magic in the world after all? Will this scar him? Will he always suspect that I am A Fraud? Can you be A Fraud if you're wearing just one sock?
